Our professional team of dentists work hard to make sure all patients having teeth removed are as comfortable as possible.
If a tooth is badly damaged it will need to be removed to reduce pain and avoid infection. If a patient’s mouth is ‘crowded’ with too many teeth, a tooth may also need to be removed. This will preserve oral health along with the patient’s ability to speak and chew properly.
During a simple tooth extraction, your dentist will numb the affected tooth with a local anaesthetic. The tooth will then be removed from its socket with dental forceps. In the majority of cases, this should only take a few minutes.
A surgical extraction may be required for teeth that have broken off around the gumline. A surgical extraction is a slightly more complex procedure. It may require more time, a small incision in the gum before removal of the tooth and stitches to aid healing afterwards. This is still carried out using anaesthetics, and so during the operation, your dentist will aim to ensure you are pain-free and as comfortable as possible.
Tooth extraction is done under local anaesthetic to keep the patient from feeling any pain. Nervous patients may also opt for sedation. Any discomfort during recovery can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. A cold compress may also be applied to the side of your face.
You may experience a small amount of bleeding and some swelling in the days following extraction. This should disappear within a week, with any stitches falling out after 2-4 weeks.
